This Sunday we meet the startling and uncompromising figure of John the Baptist. John appears out of the desert with a hard-hitting call to turn away from sin and so prepare for the coming of the Messiah. At times we come across straight talking people who don’t shrink from telling the truth. We usually find them rude and unsettling. But there was something which rang true with the words of John the Baptist. Here was a man who lived what he preached.
Many people were willing to listen to him. This is the challenge of John the Baptist. His message of repentance two thousand years ago is like an echo reverberating still to us today. His call to a change of heart is for everyone and for all generations. As we prepare during Advent for the celebration of Christmas, we are all being called to a change of mind and heart. We need to straighten our ways and clear out of our lives those habits and attachments which prevent God’s grace from transforming us and empowering us. Christmas celebrates the birth of our Lord and the custom of the season is to give gifts. Unlike the magi of old, we are not expected to bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Taking the advice of John the Baptist’s straight talking, the best gift we can give to the Lord will be an unselfish, open and repentant heart.
