Lenten Preparation in West Derwentside Catholic Partnership (WDCP)
During Lent, Christians are encouraged to pray, fast from food and things they enjoy and to give alms (offer financial help to those in need) as a way of renewing their faith. How might I respond to this call? The aim in all we do is to strengthen our love and commitment towards God and other people. Here are a few suggestions for things we might do during Lent.
Area Penitential Service
St Patrick’s Church Wednesday 13th April 7.00pm.
The Big Read
Encourages us to reflect upon St Matthew’s Gospel in small groups. The resource book used, with daily reflections, is by Bishop Tom Wright, a renowned scripture scholar. Come along and share your insights into this important account of the life of Christ. All parishioners from the Partnership are welcome.

My Lenten Gift – To St Cuthbert’s Care & An Indian Child?
Each Lent a collection is taken for the work and support of St Cuthbert’s Care. This is our diocesan care agency which supports young and old across the North East. Please be as generous as you can with this collection.
Another way you might want to give alms during Lent could include supporting a child in Fr Sarves’ Home for the Needy. Children who are orphaned or come from very poor families, are given the opportunity to attend school. Through this gift of education, these children will later be able to find worthwhile work that will help their extended families. Their fees, clothes, food and medical expenses are provided for from the generosity of people here in Consett, other parishes from our own diocese and from parishes in Mary Skaag’s home in Coventry. However, extra funds are always welcomed for this important ministry. There are always unforeseen costs which could be met from a fund created during Lent this year. If you would like to offer your Lenten almsgiving to buy a child something to help them, here are a few suggestions.
A child’s mattress £7.00
Bedding £3.00
Mosquito net (essential) £2.00
Towel, toothpaste and brush £2.20
Boy’s trousers £2.50
Boy’s shirt £1.50
Girl’s clothing/dress £3.00
Sandals for girls or boys £2.50
Carrying case for child’s clothes £3.00
Box of shampoo for children £4.00
Pens, pencils and exercise book £1.00
General visit/health check at the doctors £3.50
Please be as generous as you can. Place your offerings in an envelope marked ‘My Lenten Gift – To An Indian Child’ and put them on the Sunday offering plate or hand it to one of the priests. Individual or family donations would be welcome. Make a child happy this Lent with a special gift.
