Summer is here and even if the sun isn’t always shining it is still lovely to see everything coming into bloom. The vegetables in gardens and allotments also look lush as all the earlier planting comes into fruition. We now see the results of what started as tiny seeds, but only because they were planted in good soil, deep enough to allow sturdy roots to develop. Then the seedlings were watered regularly, fertilised and planted out where they could have enough light, warmth and space to thrive.
In today’s gospel Jesus is asking each of us what kind of garden can we provide for His message to grow. Do we nurture the Word of God planted within each of us at our baptism by putting it into practice in our everyday lives? Or is it wilting within our hearts, choking amongst weeds of jealousy and resentment? Are we providing good soil for His way to grow within us, or do we stunt its growth by only letting light in at weekend mass and then forgetting about it amidst the busyness of the week?
Like the disciples, we have all been called to build the Kingdom. We too are sent out to spread the Word, not necessarily by preaching in pulpits or on street corners, but by sharing what we have, showing kindness and concern, offering help and support. We are not meant to make this journey on our own, but are expected to bring others with us on our way.
